The muskets are coming along! Today, after first measuring the appropriate lengths, they finished cutting the wood and pipes. Next they stained the wood and painted the pipes black. We can't wait to see the finished products!

I hope everyone can make it out on May 17th to see our Historic Field Day! Not only with the historical marker be unveiled for the Star Spangled Banner National Historic Trail but we also have the pleasure of listening to our fifth grade Fife and Drummers play for us! They have been practicing very hard! Thank you Mr. Otto for working so hard with our students! Our fifth graders are continuing with their preparation for the Historic Field Day on May 17th as part of their Star Spangled Banner National Historic Trail community service project with the National Park Service. Today students used their Math and Science skills to carve out muskets used during the War of 1812 and the Battle of Baltimore. We take the boat out on the water this Thursday! Everything they are constructing will be used in the film! Thanks for all your help Mr. Hendrick! Over the course of the next few weeks, the fifth graders will be preparing for a film that will be a "reenactment" of the Battle of Baltimore. The film will be shown at the Historic Field Day here in the park on May 17th as part of the unveiling of the marker for the Star Spangled Banner National Historic Trail. Yesterday in art class students utilized Math and Art skills to recreate the American Flag (Can you guess how many stars we had in 1814?) and the British Flag that will be used in the film. The fun is just beginning! The following article was posted on the National Park Service website this week. I am unable to connect to the link so I have pasted it here for you.
PPPCS students at the Smithsonian to see the actual Star Spangled Banner in person Last week our students finished their research on their Star Spangled Banner National Historic Trail. This week we will vote on our top 3 that we want to send into the National Park Service. Next we will be creating the uniforms, designing the weapons, painting the boat that will all be used in our film we are making in our reenactment of the Battle of Baltimore. Today we put our final touches on our Star Spangled Banner Trail community service project after months of exhaustive research. Mrs. Abbi Wicklein from the National Park Service came today to help us through the final section. Students worked in groups to create the historical marker. Groups chose what they felt were the most important pictures and information to go on the marker. Each group also came up with a title for the marker. There were some very creative ideas! Tomorrow we will vote on our top three and send it into the National Park Service. The marker will be unveiled on May 17th! Save the date! Yesterday we visited the Smithsonian Musuem of American History in Washington D.C. We walked through the "Price of Freedom" exhibit which is a timeline of American history and wars fought to preserve our freedom. We also went through the Star Spangled Banner exhibit and learned even more for our research for the Star Spangled Banner National Historic Trail. Afterwards the students took in the sights and sounds of the National Mall and even got in a game of hackey sack with Mr. P! Many more pics to come! On Friday students spent some time at the Maryland Historical Society in Mt. Vernon. There students continued their research of The Battle of Baltimore. Students looked at artifacts from the time period and gained a better understanding of what life was like in Baltimore in 1814. Students also worked with primary source documents from the MDHS Archives and learned about events and other logistics on Hampstead Hill leading up to the Battle of Baltimore. All of their research will be important for the Star Spangled Banner National Historic Trail community service project. Below I have our upcoming field trips and dates listed. All of these trips are very important part of our thematic unit “Wars of Expansion” as well as our Star Spangled Banner National Trail community service project with the National Park Service. We will even be partaking in math and science activities at the Naval Academy! The first field trip slip will be coming home this Friday. Let me know if you have any questions!
